What is red light therapy?
Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of red (630–700nm) and near-infrared (800–1100nm) light to penetrate the skin and stimulate biological processes at the cellular level. Unlike UV light, which can damage skin, these wavelengths are entirely safe and have been the subject of hundreds of clinical trials over the last three decades.
The light penetrates several centimetres into the body's tissues, where it is absorbed by mitochondria — the energy-producing structures within your cells. This stimulation increases the production of ATP (the cellular fuel that powers all biological processes), which in turn accelerates the body's natural repair and regeneration mechanisms.
The science: what does red light actually do?
The primary mechanism of action is the stimulation of cytochrome c oxidase, a key enzyme in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. When red and near-infrared light hits this enzyme, it boosts ATP production, increases nitric oxide release, and reduces oxidative stress within cells. The downstream effects of these changes are extensive:
- Accelerated tissue repair — faster healing of muscle, tendon, ligament and bone
- Reduced inflammation — decreased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines
- Pain relief — modulation of pain signalling pathways, with effects comparable to some anti-inflammatory medications in research settings
- Improved circulation — increased nitric oxide promotes vasodilation and blood flow
- Collagen synthesis — stimulation of fibroblasts supports skin health and connective tissue repair
What conditions respond well to red light therapy?
Red light therapy has been studied across a remarkable range of conditions. The evidence is strongest for:
Musculoskeletal pain — chronic back pain, neck pain, arthritis, tendinopathy and joint pain consistently show significant improvement in well-designed trials. Many clients at Team Breakthrough use red light specifically for these conditions.
Post-exercise muscle recovery — multiple meta-analyses confirm that red light applied before or after exercise reduces muscle damage, soreness and recovery time. This has made it a popular tool among athletes looking to train more frequently without accumulating fatigue.
Wound healing — red light accelerates the healing of both acute wounds and chronic non-healing wounds, including diabetic ulcers.
Neuropathy and nerve pain — near-infrared light in particular has been shown to support nerve regeneration and reduce neuropathic pain.
How is a session structured?
At Team Breakthrough, red light sessions involve exposure to a clinical-grade full-body panel delivering red and near-infrared wavelengths. Sessions typically run for 10–20 minutes. The light is painless — most people feel a gentle warmth. There is no UV exposure and no risk of burning. Many clients combine red light therapy with other recovery modalities such as HBOT or cryotherapy for an enhanced effect.
How many sessions do I need?
For acute recovery after exercise, a single session post-training can make a measurable difference to next-day soreness. For chronic conditions — pain, inflammation, injury recovery — a course of sessions over several weeks is typically recommended to see sustained results. Many clients who use red light as part of a wellness membership notice progressive improvements over the first 4–8 weeks of regular use.
