The origins of Scenar
Scenar was developed in the Soviet Union in the 1970s and 1980s as part of the space programme. The challenge was to create a medical device that could treat a wide range of conditions in cosmonauts during long missions, without the need for multiple drugs or complex equipment. The result was a device that could interact with the body's own nervous system to promote healing, reduce pain and restore function.
Following the end of the space programme, Scenar technology was introduced to clinical practice in Russia and gradually made its way to Western medicine. It is now used by physiotherapists, sports medicine practitioners and pain specialists across Europe.
How does Scenar work?
Scenar works by delivering carefully modulated electrical impulses through the skin, which mimic the body's own nervous system signals. What makes it different from conventional electrical stimulation therapies is that it's interactive — the device reads the body's response to each impulse and constantly adjusts the signal accordingly. No two signals are ever identical.
This interaction stimulates the release of neuropeptides — the body's own regulatory and healing molecules — in the tissues where the device is applied. Neuropeptides are involved in pain modulation, inflammation control, immune function and tissue repair. By stimulating their release locally and systemically, Scenar activates the body's innate healing response in a way that is targeted, intelligent and non-invasive.

What does a Scenar session involve?
A typical Scenar session at Team Breakthrough lasts 30 minutes. The practitioner moves the device slowly over the skin in the area being treated, watching for the body's responses — changes in skin colour, texture and the sound produced by the device all provide information about where treatment is needed. Treatment is completely non-invasive and most people find it painless, although some report a mild tingling sensation.
The number of sessions needed depends on the condition being treated. Acute injuries often respond rapidly — sometimes within 1–3 sessions. Chronic conditions typically require a longer course of treatment, though most clients notice a meaningful improvement from early in the process.
How is Scenar different from TENS?
Scenar is often compared to TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) because both use electrical impulses through the skin. But the comparison is superficial. TENS delivers a constant, repetitive signal primarily designed to mask pain by occupying nerve pathways. Scenar delivers an adaptive, biofeedback-driven signal that actively promotes healing rather than simply blocking pain signals. The effect is not just symptomatic relief but genuine restoration of function.
